This is a major issue, as the WTTC's research shows that regular border waits of three to four hours could deter around one-third of travelers from visiting the Schengen Area. The EES aims to streamline and secure border crossings, but its implementation has been problematic. The system's rollout has been gradual, and many travelers are unaware of the changes or the requirements of the new system. This lack of communication has led to confusion and frustration, with some travelers missing their flights or connections. The European Commission needs to improve communication and ensure that travelers are aware of the new system and its requirements. The WTTC's President and CEO, Gloria Guevara, suggests that digital pre-registration tools and improved traveler communications can help reduce friction and deliver the seamless experience travelers expect. However, the EES is not without its benefits. The system aims to streamline and better secure border crossings for non-EU nationals on short stays, and it is a step towards a more modern and efficient border control system. Nevertheless, the current teething problems must be addressed to ensure a smooth and positive traveler experience. The European Commission should work with border authorities and the travel and tourism sector to ensure that the EES is implemented as smoothly as possible. In my opinion, the EES is a necessary step towards a more efficient and secure border control system, but its implementation has been flawed. The European Commission must improve communication and ensure that travelers are aware of the new system and its requirements. Only then can the EES deliver the seamless experience travelers expect and ensure the continued success of the European tourism industry.
